This Crap Can Kill You! Furlough Friday 10/9/09 more day job tidbits

Sometimes life shits. And sometimes the shit will kill you, literally.

As was the case several years back on a farm. The picture is of me performing some air sampling. The instrument I am holding has a tube coming from it, and goes down a 19ft deep, 4ft square pit.

The brown water you see blowing out of the pipe is as you might guess, shitty water, again literally. From a herd of some 1200 cows. Trust me it smells. Do I look happy doing my day job?

The sad story is someone died going down this pit to try to fix a motor on the bottom of it. The air was “bad” in more than one way. Not only did it stink, but there was not enough oxygen to breathe. Shit literally killed someone.

Dairy farms are not as pure and idyllic as we would like to think. If you have ever seen those California Happy Cow commercials, they are more reminiscent of Switzerland than California, where the herd of 1200 cows can stand ankle deep in their own muck.

Just another day in my day job. It’s a shitty job at times, and I guess I had to do it.
